How Secure Are You?

How do you fare with these answers?

  • Do you lock your van when you leave it?
  • Is juggling two keys worth the effort?
  • Does the carefree attitude of caravanners give rise to potential criminal activities?

Your answers of course should be "Yes" to all questions.

SECURITY STARTS WITH YOU!

  • Do not leave items of value in the open. i.e. fishing rods, wet suits, etc.
  • Do not leave your caravan or motorhome unlocked when away.
  • Handbags, credit cards, mobile phones should be locked up.
  • Do not leave loose change visible in your car.
  • Engrave your valuables with your Drivers Licence number.
  • Take your mobile phone with you when out walking.
  • If you see any suspicious behaviour alert the Park Manager.
  • Have a notebook and pen handy to record registration details quickly.

There are few things worse than facing up to a burglary and whether it is at home or in your van it puts a nasty slant on your activities.  Items of value left outside your van overnight are tempting bait for those so inclined in the early hours of the morning while every one is sleeping.

A quick sweep through a park can yield a few gems that will realize the thief a good reward for his efforts.  Fishing rods and reels, barbecues, fridges and even a laptop or TV left unattended for a few hours while you enjoy a swim or Happy Hour can disappear without a trace.

For the most part, the attitude change once the wide-open spaces of the country are reached is natural because crimes occur only in the populated areas! "Wrong"  It can and does happen wherever the opportunity presents itself.

Specific high cost items like mobile phones, digital cameras and DVD music players are particularly targeted and among the goods stolen. Not to mention handbags, credit cards and cheque books.  This vulnerable situation (which you probably had not given much thought to before) gives rise to TWO important aspects which need your consideration.

Firstly, what items are covered or included as part of your insurance contents section of your van or motorhome policy?

Dig out that policy, have a read, and see if you need to specify particular items of value to your insurer. (Some policies give general contents cover but will not pay over a certain limit unless the item/s and value is specified).   It would certainly make life easier if you had an electronic device which locked and alarmed your van at the press of a button like most motor vehicles.

It just so happens that the Association's newest advertiser in the November magazine can offer you just that!   Autowatch (Pty) Limited at 3 Hulme Court, Myaree offers caravanners (and boat owners) a caravan and boat security system that uses the latest State-of- the-art technology manufactured by PFK Electronics, which employs over 350 people in South Africa, Australia and the UK.

Although the security system is aimed at the after-market auto industry, its success has been exported to 25 countries worldwide.  The Autowatch 650 Security System is simple to use and designed to give years of trouble-free operation and the peace of mind that goes with knowing your valuables are well guarded.  The system comes with two robust 2-button remote control key fobs.
