At the March 2009 meeting of Club Delegates, members embraced the concept of supporting a project initiated by the Campervan and Motor Home Club of Australia (CMCA), where as part of the recreational vehicles fraternity in Australia, individual caravanners are invited to join.
The benefits work both ways, in fact three ways.
Firstly, a number of country towns in Australia (23 in Western Australia) are in the process of being assessed and accepted into the scheme as "RV Friendly Towns".
To qualify as an "RV Friendly town", the town must have basic facilities to service travellers i.e. caravanners who are self-contained and motorhome travellers (also self contained).
This means a town must have the following facilities:
Access to medical facilities
A pharmacy or a procedure to obtain pharmacological products
A general shopping area with groceries and fresh produce
A service centre for basic repairs
Parking within the town centre for shopping
A Visitor Information Centre with appropriate parking within a reasonable distance
Access to potable water
Access to a Dump Point
Provision for short term (say 24 hrs) parking within 2.5 kms of town centre
Provision for long term parking within 5-10 kms of town centre at a reasonable rate.
The second benefit of the project is for the "users" - caravanners and motorhome travellers, who are provided with a stop-over facility without having to pay the full caravan park rates and instead pay $5 per night.
To qualify as a participant in the scheme, caravanners must agree to a "Code of Conduct" which includes a number of provisions to protect the environment and the community generally, as attached below.
As members will see the requirements are not very arduous but - the third benefit - is for the environment generally and for the benefit of all.
Naturally town communities must benefit if extra money is spent in their town and that is one of the points when towns are assessed to be in this project.
